Sumiyoshi Taisha is a Shinto shrine in Osaka, Japan, believed to have been founded during the reign of Empress Jingū, and has long been widely revered as a god of seafaring. It is one of the three major Sumiyoshi shrines and is representative of Osaka. During the first three days of the New Year, the number of visitors to the shrine exceeds two million, the highest in Osaka Prefecture. The main hall, which was built in a unique architectural style called Sumiyoshi-zukuri, has all four buildings designated as national treasures. Originally, Sumiyoshi Taisha was the head shrine of the Sumiyoshi Sanja, which consisted of three shrines (West, East, and South), and now it is the combined entity of the three shrines. Sumiyoshi Taisha is known for its divine favor of safe sea voyages and prosperous business, and has many branch shrines throughout Japan. The architectural style of the shrine's main hall and offering hall has been designated as a national treasure and has had a significant influence on Japan's architectural culture. Every year, Sumiyoshi Taisha holds the Shinza Festival on the fourth Saturday and Sunday of May and the Autumn Festival on the second Saturday and Sunday of September, which attract many visitors.
