百舌鳥・古市古墳群は、4~5世紀に築造された日本最大の古墳群。堺市の百舌鳥古墳群には44基の古墳があり、 なかでも仁徳天皇陵古墳(大仙陵古墳)は墳丘長486m と、 日 本最大の前方後円墳である。 また履中天皇陵古墳 (上石津ミサンザイ古墳)が墳丘長365mで3番目の大きさ。 仁徳天皇陵古墳に隣接して百舌鳥古墳群ビジターセンターと堺市博物館があり、 古墳文化について学ぶことができる。一方の古市古墳群は羽曳野市と藤井寺市にまたがり、 全国2位の大きさ (墳丘長425m) を誇る応神天皇陵古墳 (誉田御廟山古墳) を筆頭に、45基の古墳が点在している。堺市役所21階の展望ロビーからは、 百舌鳥古墳群が一望できるほか、 三国ヶ丘駅屋上庭園みくにん広場の眺望デッキからも仁徳天皇陵古墳が眺められる。 また履中天皇陵古墳北側にはビュースポットが設けられている。
The Mozu-Furuichi Kofun Group is Japan's largest ancient tomb group built in the 4th to 5th centuries. The Mozu Kofun Group in Sakai City has 44 tombs, including the Emperor Nintoku's tomb (the Daisenryo Kofun), which has a mound length of 486m and is Japan's largest keyhole-shaped tomb. The Emperor Richu's tomb (the Kamitsumihashi Misanzai Kofun) has a mound length of 365m and is the third largest. Next to Emperor Nintoku's tomb, there is the Mozu Kofun Group Visitors Center and the Sakai City Museum, where you can learn about tomb culture. On the other hand, the Furuichi Kofun Group spans across Habikino City and Fujiidera City, and has 45 tombs scattered throughout, including the Emperor Ojin's tomb (the Kotakemaru Kofun), which boasts the second largest mound length of 425m in Japan. From the observation lobby on the 21st floor of the Sakai City Hall, you can have a panoramic view of the Mozu Kofun Group, and from the observation deck at the Mikunin Hiroba on the rooftop garden of the Mikunigaoka Station, you can see the Emperor Nintoku's tomb. There is also a view spot located on the north side of the Emperor Richu's tomb.
