四天王寺は、蘇我氏と物部氏の戦いの折、聖徳太子が崇仏派の蘇我氏の勝利を四天王に祈ったことから、推古元 (593)年に創建された。国宝 『四天王寺縁起』 『扇面法華経冊子』など多くの文化財を所蔵する。 大阪大空襲で堂宇の大半が焼失するも、 戦後に再建され、中門から講堂までまっすぐ並ぶ“四天王寺式” の美しい伽藍配置がよみがえっている。伽藍東側の池には亀がたくさんいる。
Shitennoji Temple was founded in 593 by Prince Shotoku, who prayed for the victory of the pro-Buddhist Soga clan during their battle with the Mononobe clan, and named the temple after the Four Heavenly Kings. The temple houses many cultural treasures, including the national treasures "Shitennoji Engi" and "Ogi-hokekyo Satsuei-sho."
Although much of the temple was destroyed in the bombing of Osaka during World War II, it was reconstructed after the war and the beautiful temple layout, called "Shitennoji-style," with buildings aligned in a straight line from the central gate to the lecture hall, has been restored. There are many turtles in the pond on the east side of the temple grounds.
