大阪市内中心部を流れる堂島川と土佐堀川にはさまれた中洲。江戸時代は蔵屋敷が建ち並び、 明治以降も企業や官公庁、文化施設などが集中する大阪の行政・文化・経済の中心として発展した。 現在では大阪国際会議場 (グランキューブ大阪)や国立国際美術館など、コンベンション施設や美術館が多く立地し、 令和4 (2022)年には大阪中之島美術館も開館した。 また大阪市中央公会堂や大阪府立中之島図書館、 淀屋橋や大江橋など、 国指定重要文化財の近代建築構造物も多い。 かつて“大大阪” と呼ばれた古きよき時代の雰囲気を、今も色濃く残すエリアである。中之島は大阪随一のアートゾーン。 近現代美術を紹介する国立国際美術館、 大阪中之島美術館のほか、中国・朝鮮の陶磁を紹介する大阪市立東洋陶磁美術館、 仏教美術や茶道具などを紹介する中之島香雪美術館などがある。
中洲 is an area in Osaka that is located between the Dojima River and the Tosabori River, which flow through the center of the city. During the Edo period, many storehouses and warehouses were built in the area, and since the Meiji era, it has developed into the center of Osaka's administration, culture, and economy, with companies, government offices, and cultural facilities concentrated there.
Today, the area is home to many convention facilities and art museums, such as the Grand Cube Osaka, which houses the Osaka International Convention Center, and the National Museum of Art, Osaka. In 2022, the Osaka City Museum of Modern Art also opened in the area. Additionally, there are many modern architectural structures designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan, such as the Osaka City Central Public Hall, the Osaka Prefectural Nakanoshima Library, and the Yodoyabashi and Oebashi bridges.
The area still exudes an old-fashioned charm from the days when it was known as "Daido Osaka." Nakanoshima, in particular, is considered the foremost art zone in Osaka, with notable art museums like the National Museum of Art, Osaka, the Osaka City Museum of Modern Art, the Osaka Museum of Oriental Ceramics, and the Kansai-kan of the National Diet Library. These museums feature a wide range of art from contemporary works to Buddhist art, tea ceremony utensils, and ceramic art from China and Korea.
