Edo Castle, which was the residence of the Tokugawa shogunate, became the Imperial Palace in the first year of Meiji era (1868). Since Emperor Meiji, it has been the residence of successive emperors, including the current emperor, as well as the venue for the emperor's official duties and various ceremonies, such as the palace. In addition, there is the Momijiyama Imperial Cocoonery, which has been passed down to successive empresses since Empress Shoken (Emperor Meiji's consort), as a facility for sericulture. The palace, which showcases the beauty of traditional Japanese architecture, was mostly built using domestically-sourced building materials. The surrounding area includes gardens and remains of Edo Castle that are open to the public, and many people from both within Japan and abroad visit for the annual event of general audience with the emperor.
