花巻にある12の温泉地が集まる花巻温泉峡。そのうち7つの温泉がある豊沢川沿いのエリアが花巻南温泉峡だ。どの温泉も緑豊かな山々に囲まれたロケーションにあり秘湯といった趣。山の神温泉の優香苑には花巻温泉郷最大級の大露天風呂があり、 男女合わせて50畳以上の広さを誇る。 また、大沢温泉には200年前の建物を利用した湯治宿があり、 昔ながらの共同炊事場で料理をすることができる。 宮沢賢治がここの湯が好きで足しげく通っていた鉛温泉 「藤三旅館」の白猿の湯も有名。
伝承六百年、白猿伝説。今を去ること、およそ六百年の昔。ここの温泉主である藤井家の遠祖が高倉山麓で木こりをしている際に、岩窟から出てきた一匹の白猿が、桂の木の根元から湧き出る泉で手足の傷を癒しているのをみた。これが温泉の湧出であることを知り、一族が天然風呂として用いるようになったとされる。以来「白猿の湯」(俗名桂の湯)と呼ばれるようになった。
「白猿の湯」は基本混浴になっていますが、女性専用の時間帯があります。※毎日午前6時から午前7時・午後2時から午後3時・午後7時半から午後9時です。浴場入口で女性専用の時間ではないかをまず確認。女性専用の時間帯といっても鍵がかかっているわけではないので注意が必要です。湯は熱くなく、ぬるくもなく適温。立ったままの入浴なので、バランスを保ちながらの入浴となります。不思議な体験です。

Among them, the area along the Toyosawa River, which has seven hot springs, is called the Hachimantai Minami Onsen Gorge. Each hot spring has a location surrounded by lush green mountains and a charming atmosphere like a hidden hot spring. Yukouen in the Yamano Kami Onsen has the largest open-air bath in the Hachimantai Onsen area, boasting a size of over 50 tatami mats for men and women combined. In addition, there is a hot spring inn using a building from 200 years ago in the Osawa Onsen, where you can cook in a traditional communal kitchen. The Shirasaru-no-Yu of the "Fujisan Ryokan," which was a favorite of Kenji Miyazawa, is also famous.
Legend of the White Monkey, passed down for six hundred years. About 600 years ago, the ancestor of the Fuji family, the owner of this hot spring, saw a white monkey coming out of a cave and healing its wounded arms and legs in a spring that gushed out from the roots of a katsura tree while he was logging at the foot of Mt. Takakura. Realizing that this was a hot spring, the family began to use it as a natural bath. Since then, it has been called "Shirasaru-no-Yu" (commonly known as Katsura-no-Yu).
"Shirasaru-no-Yu" is primarily mixed gender, but there are women-only hours. ※Every day from 6 a.m. to 7 a.m., 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., and 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Confirm at the entrance to the bathhouse whether it is a women-only time. Note that even during women-only hours, the door is not locked. The water is not too hot or too lukewarm, but just the right temperature. You will be standing while bathing, so it is a unique experience that requires you to maintain your balance.
