Kawasaki Daishi, formally known as Hei-ma-ji, was founded by a samurai named Heima Kanenori who was forced to leave his hometown and became a fisherman in Kawasaki. Heima retrieved a wooden statue of Kobo Daishi (the founder of Shingon Buddhism) from the sea using a fishing net, which marked the beginning of the temple. Kawasaki Daishi is famous for its power to ward off misfortune, and it is one of the most popular places for Hatsumode (the first visit to a temple or shrine in the new year) in Japan. The temple's 150-meter-long approach, called Nakamise Street, is lined with souvenir shops and restaurants. Some of the local specialties include Tonkotsu candy, a long candy that is cut into small pieces in front of the store, and Daishi-maki, a type of rice cracker wrapped in a large sheet of nori seaweed.
Kanamara Matsuri, also known as the Festival of the Steel Phallus, is a Japanese festival held annually in spring at Kanayama Shrine in Kawasaki. The exact date varies, but the main festival is usually held on the first Sunday of April. The festival's central theme, the phallus, is reflected in illustrations, candies, carved vegetables, decorations, and parade floats. Whether seeking blessings for fertility, safe childbirth, or successful marriages, the festival attracts a diverse crowd, including many foreigners. The sight of people of all races and genders openly holding and eating penis-shaped candy is surreal and has made the festival a hot topic on the internet every year. Why not experience this unique festival for yourself this year?
