Lake Ashi was created by a volcanic explosion approximately 3,100 years ago, which caused a landslide that dammed up a river. The lake is surrounded by various leisure facilities and souvenir shops, and sightseeing boats that cruise around the lake are also popular. From the southern shore, visitors can see the stunning inverted image of Mt. Fuji reflected on the lake's surface. Originally, Lake Ashi was considered a sacred area of the Hakone Shrine, and ascetic monks used to perform purifying rituals here. There is also a legend that a dragon with nine heads used to inhabit the lake, but was subdued by the prayer of a famous Buddhist monk, Man'gan Shonin, and is now enshrined as the Kuzuryu Shrine.
