中華街南側に広がる小高い丘の上が山手地区。 横浜港の開港後、海を望むこの地が外国人居留地となった。 明治42(1909)年建造の山手資料館をはじめ、多くの洋館が残されている。 居留地と港を結ぶ元町ショッピングストリートは外国人を顧客とする店舗が増えて発展。 1970年代後半にはハマトラという一大ファッションブームの発信地となった。
Yamate Area is located on a small hill south of Chinatown. After Yokohama Port was opened, this area overlooking the sea became a foreign settlement. Many Western-style houses, including the Yamate Museum built in 1909, remain to this day. Motomachi Shopping Street, which connects the settlement and the port, has grown and developed with an increasing number of stores catering to foreign customers. In the late 1970s, it became the birthplace of a major fashion boom called "Hamatora."
