山下公園は、関東大震災の瓦礫で海を埋め立てて昭和5(1930)年に開園。横浜港に面した部分の長い長方形をした7万4000㎡の広大な園内には、約160種1900株が植えられた未来のバラ園、 さまざまな記念碑のほか、 昭和5(1930)年に竣工の国の重要文化財の貨客船氷川丸が博物館船として停泊している。 夏季のアイスクリーム屋台も名物。
Yamashita Park was created in 1930, during the fifth year of the Showa era, by filling in the sea with rubble from the Great Kanto Earthquake. The vast park spans 74,000 square meters of land in a long rectangular shape facing Yokohama Port, featuring a future rose garden with approximately 1,900 bushes of 160 varieties, various monuments, and the museum ship Hikawa Maru, a national important cultural property completed in 1930 that now serves as a museum. In the summer, the park is famous for its ice cream stands.
