源頼朝の先祖である源頼義により、 康平6 (1063) 年に京都の石清水八幡宮から密かに勧請され鶴岡宮として祀られた。 治承4(1180) 年、鎌倉に入った頼朝が今の地に遷した。 源氏の氏神、 幕府の守護社として武家に崇敬された。
In 1063, during the reign of Emperor Go-Sanjo, Minamoto no Yorimasa secretly enshrined the Tsurugaoka Hachiman Shrine in Kamakura under the name "Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gū" at the request of his son, Minamoto no Yoriyoshi, who was the grandfather of Minamoto no Yoritomo. Yoritomo later moved the shrine to its current location in Kamakura in 1180, after he entered Kamakura and established the Kamakura shogunate. The shrine became revered by the samurai as the ancestral shrine of the Minamoto clan and as the guardian shrine of the shogunate.
