水郷の町として知られる柳川市は江戸時代の掘割が網目のように張り巡らされている。川下り舟で市内を回る川下りは船頭さんの説明や歌を聞きながら、 四季折々 の景色を眺めながら、ゆったりとした時間を楽しむことができる。 約70分の川下りでは水上売店や赤れんがの並倉、白黒の格子が印象的ななまこ壁などを見学しながら、 緑のしだれ柳や水路沿いに咲く花々に包まれて進んでいく。下船場そばには、 柳川名物うなぎのせいろ蒸しが味わえる店が並ぶ。 このほか、 柳川藩主立花邸 御花 や北原白秋生家・記念館など、 徒歩で回れる観光スポットも。
Yanagawa City, known as a town of waterways, has a network of Edo-period canals that crisscross like a mesh. The boat ride through the city on a traditional canal boat, known as "kawakudari," provides a relaxing and leisurely way to enjoy the changing scenery of the four seasons while listening to the boatman's commentary and songs. The 70-minute ride takes you through a landscape of weeping willows and flowers blooming along the waterway, as well as sites such as waterborne shops, the Akarenga-Namakura (a red-brick warehouse), and the Namako-Kabe (a wall decorated with black and white tiles). Near the landing area, there are many restaurants where you can try Yanagawa's famous "unagi no seiro-mushi" (steamed eel in a bamboo basket). Other tourist spots that you can visit on foot include the Yanagawa Clan's Lord's Residence "O-hana" and the Kitahara Hakushu Memorial Museum, the birthplace and museum of Hakushu Kitahara.

There are four companies that operate the Yanagawa river cruises, all of which have boarding points within walking distance from Nishitetsu Yanagawa Station. These companies will take you by donko boat to the central area of the sightseeing spots. The price varies depending on the company, but typically ranges from 1,500 to 1,650 yen per person.
